ViaBackwards is a server-side plugin that enables older Minecraft clients to join servers running newer versions. It converts server packets into formats that older clients can understand, allowing version compatibility across the ViaVersion ecosystem.

- Allows players on Minecraft 1.9 and newer to connect to updated servers.
- Older clients cannot see or interact with blocks, items, and mechanics introduced after their version.
- Sound mappings may be incomplete for older clients.
- Inventory desyncs can occur for clients below version 1.17.
- Clients below 1.19.4 cannot use the smithing table on 1.20+ servers without additional mods like AxSmithing.
Installation
- Ensure ViaVersion plugin is installed on your server.
- Verify you have Java 8 or newer installed.
- Download ViaBackwards and place it in your server's plugin folder.
- Restart your server to load the plugin.
Compatibility
ViaBackwards supports clients from version 1.9 onwards. Version 1.8 and lower are not supported by this plugin; use ViaRewind or ProtocolSupport for those versions instead. This plugin requires ViaVersion to function.
